AROCA EMR to Hanging Rock Sept 2014
The club organised a run through the Macedon Ranges, stopping for coffee in Trentham and ending at the Hanging Rock reserve for a picnic/BBQ lunch. Beautiful spring day and some lovely back roads to enjoy. Jack and I took the Giulietta s**t-box and it was fun, if a little treacherous in the handling department. Some lovely Alfas out in the...
Veloce Racing Wakefield Park – August 2014
We had a great road trip to Wakefield Park near Goulburn in NSW, along with three other Alfa racers from Victoria. I joined a grid of 38 Alfa Romeo racing cars in what surely must be a record number in Australia if not further afield. I’d never been to Wakefield Park before, but what a magic little track. It feels a bit like Winton short circuit, being short and technical suiting handling over horsepower. It’s a little...
A new heart with 16 valves
The old 1.5 8v engine was quite sick after our sprint day in March, so we decided it was time to build the 16v engine. We’d been collecting parts for the engine for years, but just needed a hurry up! 1.7 block with a 1.5 cranks (makes 1.6, to keep me in class) Cat cams 288deg/12.1mm lift + valve springs, retainers, buckets Everything lightened and balanced. 10.2:1 compression Standard valve sizes etc. Dellorto 45 carbs. ...
Introducing the Brown Hornet
A ‘rust-free’ early Sud sedan huh? The message came through the club that I should go and collect this early sedan from a chap up in Myrtleford (in the Alpine region of Australia). We thought about it for a while, and then decided why not do a family trip to have a look? The previous owner is a club member who heard about me collecting the Sud Ti out of the shed in Parkes this year and thought I might offer his baby a...
An afternoon with Giulia
On a special July Thursday we borrowed Fiona’s parents’ 1965 Giulia Super and took a drive through the hills to the Yarra Valley and the excellent restaurant at Oakridge Wines. The little 1600 is quite capable in modern traffic, but is something truly special once you hit the sweeping open roads. A recent upgrade to Koni dampers has really tightened up the handling, but the car remains very stock and lovely to drive. ...
GTA in the Family
After having so much fun in March, my father-in-law got excited and acquired himself a keenly priced Alfa 147 GTA for the track. While Madame Sud is undergoing a heart transplant, I was lucky enough to get a run in the 147 at Broadford. A very wet day, which is perhaps not a bad way to explore the limits of this little pocket rocket. The beautiful Busso v6 in it’s ultimate form, making 250 horsepower – definitely a lot...
