We had a great road trip to Wakefield Park near Goulburn in NSW, along with three other Alfa racers from Victoria. I joined a grid of 38 Alfa Romeo racing cars in what surely must be a record number in Australia if not further afield. I’d never been to Wakefield Park before, but what a magic little track. It feels a bit like Winton short circuit, being short and technical suiting handling over horsepower. It’s a little more flowing and with some elevation change in the climb up to turns 2 and 3 to make it interesting. It’s definitely not easy to get right, and I followed a lot of cars doing a lot of different lines through different parts of the circuit.
We got two practice sessions on the Saturday and two races, the second race being suddenly very wet. Two dry races on Sunday, and then packed up and back to Melbourne Sunday night. I qualified in 26th place, and stayed around there or slightly backwards overall for the weekend – but had a brilliant time learning a new track and racing against some of my old friends and new. The new 1600 engine is going brilliantly, and didn’t miss a beat all weekend.
